Colombia peace deal may need more time

The Colombian government has been engaged in peace talks with the country’s largest rebel group, FARC, since November 19, 2012.

The two parties agreed to hold the peace talks in Havana. The dialogues are formally guaranteed by Norway and Cuba, and are additionally sponsored by Chile and Venezuela.

In order to advance the process, the negotiators agreed to a fixed agenda before formally beginning the negotiations. The agenda is based on a signed preliminary General Agreement that functions as a framework, defining which demands can be made and which not.

This General Agreement was signed after a year and a half of secret negotiations between the Santos administration and the FARC, and sought to put an end to a war that had begun to seem endless..
