The two-day International Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region, which bring together of a number of countries concerned with the Syrian issue in the presence of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, kicked off at the European Union headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday.
In her opening address, Federica Mogherini, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs said a momentum should be given in order to push forward peace talks on Syria in Geneva, calling on the international community to support these talks, work on a ceasefire and establish a truce between the parties to the conflict. The political solution in Syria is the only way of defeating the ISIS group and terrorist organizations as well as ensuring the return of Syrians to their country.
Mogherini said providing humanitarian aid was not a "naive" exercise, saying aid was essential to the lives of thousands in Syria and neighboring countries. For his part, Antonio Guterres said the massacre in the town of Khan Sheikhoun must be investigated. "The horrific events of yesterday demonstrate that unfortunately war crimes are going on in Syria, that international humanitarian law remains being violated frequently," he said.
Guterres said he was confident that UN Security Council meeting due later in the day would "live up to its responsibilities." British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson blamed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the Khan Sheikhoun 's chemical attack . "All the evidence I have suggests that this was the Assad regime who did it in the full knowledge that they were using illegal weapons in a barbaric attack on their own people," Johnson said.
