
The case of treason against the former president, Pervez Musharraf, was adjourned by Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday for an indefinite period. The court adjourned the case for consultations over setting up of a special court to hear the case against the former military ruler. Attorney General Munir Malik, on Monday, submitted in writing stance of the government to the Supreme Court regarding the case. The court gave the federal government three days to submit the steps government needed to take to bring Musharraf to trial under Article 6 of the constitution of high treason. The Attorney General has to provide detailed line of action on behalf of government in filing a complaint against Musharraf for his alleged "unconstitutional actions." Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that he has ordered the Secretary Interior to formally direct the Director FIA for constituting a special investigation team to commence "an inquiry and investigations in relation to the acts of General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf of November 3, 2007 that may amount to high treason under Article 6 of the constitution and to finalise as expeditiously as possible the time of action and statement of the case to be put up by the federal government before the Supreme Court. The bench hearing the case headed by Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja adjourned the hearing for holding consultation with the Chief Justice of Pakistan in order to constitute a special court to hear the treason case against the ex military strongman. The court has also rejected a plea to order the formal arrest of Musharraf as no formal charges against him were put before the court.
