Croatia sends 6000 policemen on borders due to refugee crisis

Croatia has dispatched 6,000 policemen to its borders in a bid to monitor the number of potential refugees trying to cross into the country, the head of the Croatian Border Administration, Zlatko Sokolar said on Monday.

There weren't big number of refugees registered at the borders, Sokolar said at a conference on the refugee crisis held here, adding that eight Syrians had entered Croatia on Saturday and were accommodated in an asylum centre in Zagreb.

Sokolar said he did not expect an overflow of refugees to Croatia after Hungary tightened its regulations on illegal border crossing.

Services and institutions were ready to fulfill Croatia's commitment to take in 550 refugees from Syria, he added.

Croatia could accommodate up to 3,000 refugees at police facilities, Sokolar said, adding that all migrants and refugees would be taken to a security check point at the border, and then transported to registration centers where they would receive medical treatment and additional help.
