Croatian Parliament Speaker Josip Leko said on Sunday Croatia was willing to participate in dealing with the refugee crisis after a big wave of migrants arrived in the neighbouring countries.
The refugee issue could not be overcome before the causes of the crisis were solved, he said, adding Croatia was willing to participate in dealing with the crisis at a highly humane level.
He said: "We will be ready even for more extreme situations."
Earlier, Croatian Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic said the country has stepped up security at its border after numerous refugees poured into neighbouring Serbia and Macedonia.
He warned of a possible migrants' wave in Croatia following a fence was built in Hungary, saying it might lead to migrants using Croatia as a transit route.
About 5,000 migrants who crossed the Greek-Macedonian border arrived in the border area in south Serbia over Saturday night and Sunday morning, according to local media
