Croatian PM, Merkel have phone conversation on migrants issues

Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic and German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed on Friday that migrant issues have to be solved on the EU's external borders.

Merkel called Milanovic on Friday afternoon and they talked on the latest development of refugee wave in Croatia. They agreed that the problem should be solved on the EU's external borders, according to a governmental statement.

After a session of the National Security Council (VNS), which was held on Friday afternoon and attended by prime minister and several ministers as well as the representatives from army and security services, Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic said the current refugee wave hitting the country was not only Croatia's problem but also Europe's because the refugees wanted to reach some other countries.

The issue had to be dealt with in cooperation with European partners because Croatia was on the EU's external border, she said.

"Croatia was an EU member,but not part of the Schengen area. We have obligations but we also have the right to expect the EU to help us protect our border, which is the EU's external border," she added.
