Cuba to hold national military drill

Cuba is preparing to hold a national military exercise from Tuesday to Friday, state media reported Monday. The so-called Bastion military exercise was first conducted in 1980 by then Cuban leader Fidel Castro to test the nation's defense preparedness. The exercise "is not to threaten anybody or to boast military might," official daily Granma said. Participants in the drill include Cuba's Revolutionary Armed Forces, the Interior Ministry and Communist Party organizations, among others, the paper said. The exercise was suspended in 1989 and resumed in 2004.
