Beijing - Xinhua
Syrian security forces shot dead two protesters and arrested dozens others as the anti-regime demonstrations continue across Syria on Saturday. Activists in Khan Shikhon said forces opened fire at protests of a few thousand killing Ragab Mohamed and Moataz al-Marei and wounding 13 others. Military tanks were seen marching in Homs’ streets and rights activists in the town reported 10 protesters were injured earlier on Saturday after thousands started marching, following a late afternoon prayer. Internet and other communications were cut in areas of Homs while security forces continued arresting protesters throughout the day. On Friday, around 38 Syrians were killed across the country when government forces opened fire at protesters in several cities leaving hundreds wounded and scores arrested, the Syrian Observaroy for Human Rights said Friday. Five people were killed in Der’a and a sixth was killed in Tishela, three others were shot dead in the village of Serja and Aweed, in northwest Syria when army forces raided the towns. Seven others were killed in Hama in the Syrian countryside and four more were killed in and around the capital Damascus. Ongoing protests that demand President Bashar al-Assad step down have entered their 6th month with over 2,600 killed, according to a recent UN report. Rights activists say the real death toll is much higher and say thousands more have disappeared. The Syrian regime downplays the violence saying that the protesters are “armed thugs who terrorize citizens.” Inspired by uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, the Syrian people have been demanding the end of the regime and an end to Assad’s 11-year rule. Syria’s autocratic rule is considered to be the toughest in the region with Assad continuing his father, Hafez al-Assad’s iron fist on the country.
