Egypt army's ex-number 2 could face legal action

A complaint has been filed against the former number two in Egypt's army, General Sami Anan, accused of illegally acquiring building plots near Cairo, a judicial source said on Sunday. The source said lawyer Samir Sabri's complaint has been sent by attorney general Abdel Meguid Mahmud to the military prosecutor's office to decide whether to file a lawsuit. Anan was deputy head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, a group of 20 generals led by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi who ruled Egypt after last year's fall of president Hosni Mubarak. On August 12, newly elected President Mohamed Morsi boosted his authority by retiring both Tantawi and Anan and scrapping a constitutional document that gave the military legislative and other powers. Both were awarded the Greatest Nile Collar, Egypt's most prestigious award, and retained as presidential advisors.
