Egypt backs political solution in South Sudan, opposes punitive measures

Egypt reiterated its support for a political solution to the crisis in South Sudan for the benefit of the people of South Sudan and stability in the region, said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Badr Abdel Aati on Saturday.
Commenting on the proposed UN sanctions on South Sudan, the spokesman asserted that Egypt opposes any punitive measures against South Sudan.
"Egypt believes that it is more important to grant the South Sudanese parties enough time to reach a lasting and stable agreement through negotiations," he said.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is considering sanctions on both sides of the South Sudanese conflict for continued fighting and failing to abide by a signed ceasefire agreement.
