Hundreds of anti-government protestors marched in Cairo's Tahrir Square Thursday to demand the handover of power to a civilian government. Members of the April 6 Youth Movement and the Democratic Front Party were among the demonstrators who chanted "Tantawi is Mubarak" and other slogans. Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi was former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's defense minister for two decades. The newspaper al-Masry al-Youm said Thursday's protests were held amidst mounting political unrest in the wake of the ruling military council's renewal and expansion of the country's emergency powers law, which allow people to be detained without charges.
