Egypt takes part in UN disarming conference in Japan

Egypt took part in the UN conference on nuclear disarmament that was recently held in Japan.

Assistant Foreign Minister for Multilateral and International Security Affairs Ambassador Hisham Badr represented Egypt in the conference that was held in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

The conference is an annual event that coincided with the 70th anniversary of the first ever nuclear bombing, which took place on August 6, 1945 in Hiroshima.

A statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said Egypt's participation came as part of continued Egyptian efforts to enhance a system on preventing nuclear weapons around the world.

The assistant foreign minister's world dwelt on the Egyptian viewpoint as regards disarmament efforts, bases on the axes earlier proposed by Egypt and the Arab and non-alignment groups, affirming the importance of the Middle East being an area clear of weapons of mass destruction.

The Egyptian vision affirms that the Non-Proliferation Treaty is a main tool to achieve peace and stability on the international and regional levels, the statement said.

The conference, organized by the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs in Japan and attended by representatives from different countries and international bodies, is aimed to promote eradication of nuclear weapons.
