Egypt underlines importance of Alamein-hosted UN forum

A senior Egyptian diplomat underlined on Saturday the importance of a forum to be attended by the permanent representatives in Alamein city in Egypt.

The gathering, kick off on Sunday, will mull emerging challenges and threats that face the international community and ways to address them.

The topics of international security and peace along with means to activate multi-lateral frameworks and the role of small and medium states in the process of decision making will figure high during the forum, said Hisham Badr, the assistant foreign minister of multilateral affairs and international security.

The forum comes as Egypt prepares to join the UN Security Council in 2016-17, a step that will boost Cairo's role in drawing out priorities of the international community, said Badr.

The foreign ministry steers Egypt's efforts to mobilize support for Cairo's bid to joint the UNSC, he noted.

Egypt's view for the future of the multilateral system and mechanisms of decision making at the UN is offered in contacts with the permanent representatives of the UN, he said.

That the forum is held in Egypt reflects the attention paid by Cairo to the UN, he noted.
