Egypt's Cairo Criminal Court decided Tuesday to release former Speaker of Shura Council (upper house of the parliament) Safwat Sherif on bail of 50,000 Egyptian pounds ( about 8,196 U.S. dollars), official news agency MENA reported. The court's verdict came after Sherif, who was jailed on corruption charges, had submitted a complaint to the Cairo Court of Appeal saying that he was held beyond the time limit of remand approved by the Egyptian law. Sherif, arrested in the wake of last year's unrest, served as the head of Shura Council and the secretary general of the dissolved National Democratic Party during former President Hosni Mubarak's era.
