EU ambassador reiterates commitment to support Lebanese Army

Head of the EU Delegation to Lebanon Angelina Eichhorst on Saturday reiterated the EU commitment to continue encouraging additional international assistance to the Lebanese Armed Forces in the coming period.
She said that the European Union commends all efforts made by the Lebanese Army and security forces in facing the security challenges the country is currently confronted with, NNA reported.
Eichhorst visited the second Land Border Regiment of the Lebanese Army in the area of the Beqaa border town of Ras Baalbek.
She discussed the security situation along the Eastern Lebanese border and paid tribute to the continuous efforts and sacrifices by the Lebanese Army to fend off attacks by Syria-based criminal extremists groups.
Eichhorst paid respect to the families of the soldiers who have been killed and wounded in Ras Baalbek while performing crucial border surveillance missions.
"Today our thoughts go the mothers and fathers of the Lebanese servicemen who gave their lives for peace and security," she said.
Eichhorst commended the Lebanese Armed Forces for their ensuing successful operations.
"Today there is much more coordination of assistance of the different partner countries in terms of equipment and funding efforts and a stronger presence on the ground in support of the Army. Within the European Union there is currently a very good exchange of information in a spirit of assisting the Lebanese Army command to truly modernize its Army," noted Eichhorst.
"The EU understands the huge challenges faced by the Army at its borders not least in the current context and confirms it continued support," Eichhorst said.
The European Union and EU Member States total financial support to the Lebanese Armed Forces has reached around 68 million Euro.
