The European Union has called for an "immediate halt" to the fighting in the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo to enable medical evacuations, aid deliveries and essential infrastructure repairs. "Humanitarian operations in Aleppo ... cannot be part of any military strategy," EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said in a statement.
The EU "strongly condemned" the escalation of violence in Aleppo, including the "excessive and disproportionate attacks by the Syrian regime." The bloc also called on all conflict parties to end hostilities and lift all sieges to allow "sustained, countrywide humanitarian access to those in need." dpa reported.
