EU: It would step up role in Libya if unity government formed

The European Union is looking to step up its role significantly in Libya, if a United Nations peace push paves the way for some form of a national unity government, The Wall Street Journal reported on its website.
At a news conference after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Riga, Latvia, the EU’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini pledged the bloc would provide “all possible support” if peace talks make progress.
Political divisions and factional fighting have beset Libya since a Western-led military operation helped oust longtime leader Muammar Gadhafi.
Leadership of the country is now contested by the internationally recognized government based in the eastern city of Tobruk and the rebel group Libya Dawn located in the capital Tripoli.
