EU, NATO condemn attack in Volgograd

The President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, Sunday condemned in the strongest terms the heinous terrorist attack in Volgograd this morning. "I transmit my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and my solidarity to the Government and people of Russia," he said in a brief statement. On his part, NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, condemning the attack said, "There can be no justification for such barbarous attacks." "NATO and Russia stand together in the fight against terrorism, including by working together on technology to prevent attacks on public transport systems. We will continue to cooperate to improve the safety of our citizens, and the security of our countries," he added in a statement. According to media reports, a suicide bomber carried out the attack on a train station in Russia's southern city of Volgograd in which 15 people were killed.
