EU: Ukraine must preserve its unity

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, called Sunday for the formation of an inclusive government in Ukraine and for all sides to safeguard the country's unity. In a statement, Ashton said: "The European Union expects everyone in Ukraine to behave responsibly with a view to protect the unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the country. I call on everyone to abide by the rule of the law and the Constitution", Sky News reported. Ashton said she welcomed Tymoshenko's release, which was an "important step forward in view of addressing concerns regarding selective justice in the country". The 28-member EU also remained "fully committed" to support an inclusive political process, help de-escalate the situation and assist Ukraine in the process of reform, Ashton said.
