EU urges more pressure on opponents of Libya deal

EU foreign policy and security chief Federica Mogherini urged on Wednesday the international community to exercise more pressure on the parties that have not signed the Libyan initial deal so far.

In statements, he said the EU was mulling imposing sanctions on those parties but prefer that they come through a UN resolution.

The Tobruk-based parliament and government as well as representatives from municipalities in Tripoli and the western city of Misrata signed last week an initial power-sharing agreement under the sponsorship of the UN but without the attendance of the Tripoli-based General National Congress (GNC) that asked more amendments to the UN-brokered deal.

Libya has two rival governments and parliaments, those recognized by the international community are sitting in Tobruk while the others are residing in the capital, Tripoli.

Mogherini said the EU discussed allocating 100 million euro to back the national unity government that will be formed after the deal.
