EU voices concern over developments in Libya

The EU is following the different incidents taking place in the East of Libya including those which have followed the announcement by some groups regarding the appointment of a government in the region of Cyrenaica, an EU spokesman said here Friday. "The EU believes that the on-going constitutional process provides the appropriate legal framework to discuss issues related to the future shape of the Libyan state such as, for instance, the degree of autonomy of the different regions and the distribution of the country's natural resources," said Michael Mann, spokesman for EU High Representative for foreign affairs and security policy Catherine Ashton, in a statement."The EU is concerned about the use of force by armed groups against state institutions, including the illegal seizure of energy facilities and smuggling of natural resources. The EU welcomes and encourages further efforts by the Libyan government to resolve peacefully the disruptions of Libya's energy exports," he noted.Mann said that the EU will continue supporting the Libyan institutions on their way forward towards democratic transition and throughout the different stages established in the Libyan Constitutional Roadmap.In this regard, the EU encourages the Libyan authorities to proceed with the elections for the Constitutional Drafting Assembly and to do everything necessary as to guarantee an inclusive process for the drafting and the adoption of the new Constitution, he added.
