Sports and Youth Minister Faysal Karami said he supports disarming Tripoli and the rest of Lebanon to restore law and order and end the chaotic situation in the country. Speaking to Sawt al Ghad, Karami explained that the armed ambush against his convoy in Tripoli was the result of the proliferation of weapons in this city as well as the absence of the government's credibility and clout. "The battles raging in the city are futile battles with no clear political objectives. The state handles the security incident temporarily, places plans but never enforce them," the minister added. Karami stressed that he will spare no effort to restore stability and peace in Tripoli and all of Lebanon. Responding to a question on whether all of Tripoli should be disarmed, the minister said that this slogan is bit suspicious because the people behind them only want to target the resistance which is fighting Israel. But karami suggested that he favors disarming all of Tripoli at this stage if this step will not include Hezbollah and the resistance. Karami praised former Prime Minister Saad Hariri's drive to disarm Tripoli and deploy Lebanese army and security forces in this city. Commenting on Hezbollah's weapons, Karami said: "we are still living in awkward situation because Israel still occupies part of Lebanese territories and violates Lebanese sovereignty through its collaborators. We need an unconventional apparatus to resist Israel. However, I don't support Hezbollah using its weapons inside Lebanon." Karami said some Lebanese have misunderstood the salafits movements in Lebanon. "There are some salafists who believe in making change through elections while others believe in the jihad to attain their political goals." Karami denied the existence of Al Qaeda in Lebanon.
