Fiji, Honduras establish diplomatic ties

Fiji and Honduras have established diplomatic relations, the Fijian government announced Sunday.

Fiji's Minister of Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola and Arturo Alvarez, secretary of state of foreign affairs and international cooperation of Honduras signed a joint communique formalizing the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries on Saturday local time in New York, the United States, according to Fiji's Department of Information.

The two senior officials expressed the need to strengthen bilateral relations and friendly ties and also expand collaboration at the international fora on the basis of the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.

Alvarez expressed the readiness of Honduras to provide assistance to Fiji in various fields of common interest, and Kubuabola thanked Honduras for supporting Fiji in its UN initiatives, adding that he looks forward to closer cooperation between the two countries within the framework of the UN.

In line with the Look North policy, Fiji has been expanding its diplomatic ties across the globe. To date, the Pacific island country has established diplomatic relations with over 170 countries in the world, statistics show.
