Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh on Thursday attended a UN Security Council meeting that was dedicated to discussing humanitarian issues in Syria. The meeting, which was attended by the foreign ministers of the UN Security Council member-countries and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki- moon, called for enhancing international efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people. In remarks during the meeting, the minister highlighted the tragic situation in Syria as well as the continuing violence which claimed the lives of thousands of Syrians. Judeh stressed the need for collective work to avert a civil war in the neighboring country that will have dangerous repercussions on the who region. “His Majesty King Abdullah II voiced Jordan’s deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Syria and reiterated Jordan’s call for the need to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis, he added. Judeh said that Jordan is the most affected country by the current situation in Syria, adding that the Kingdom condemns without any reservation the continued killing and bloodshed in Syria. Jordan, the minister said, is hosting thousands of Syrians and is providing them with services despite its difficult economic and financial situation as well as the lack of resources. “Despite the challenges facing us, Jordan did not take any measures to prevent the Syrians from entering the Kingdom,” he said. Judeh urged the international community to assist the Kingdom to enable it to meet the basic health and educational needs of Syrian refugees in the Kingdom. Earlier, the foreign minister met with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres and discussed the current situation in Syria as well as the issues of displaced Syrians in the Kingdom. Judeh voiced Jordan’s appreciation of the UNHCR for assisting the Kingdom in hosting an increasing number of Syrians who are fleeing their country due to the violence.
