Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received a telephone call on Tuesday from Staffan de Mistura, the UN envoy to Syria, who posted him on specifics of a Syrian ceasefire agreement recently reached between the US and Russia.
The UN envoy praised the role played by Egypt in supporting that agreement through getting the different Syrian parties to abide by the ceasefire and to positively contribute to political negotiations to be resumed in the coming stage, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.
Shoukry told de Mistura Egypt is keen on having the ceasefire implemented to reach a permanent lay down of arms in all Syrian cities, Abu Zeid added. The foreign minister said this would help deliver aid to the Syrian people, which is a top priority of Egypt.
Shoukry also pressed for serious action to resume the political talks between all Syrian parties as soon as possible, the spokesman added.
