France calls for swift implementation of Syria aid access resolution

France on Saturday asked for the rapid implementation of UN resolution to facilitate humanitarian access in Syria, the country's Foreign Affairs Ministry said. "The requests of the Security Council must be implemented. The resolution planned a monitoring mechanism to ensure this and to approve additional measures if no significant improvement is observed," the Quai d'Orsay said. A strong advocate of sanctions to put pressure on Syrian president to quit power, France will energise efforts to force Damascus to respect the United Nations' agencies and to facilitate their access to provide humanitarian assistance to Syrian people, the statement added. Earlier on Saturday, the UN Security Council unanimously approves Syria aid access resolution that demanded all parties allow "rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access for UN humanitarian agencies ... including across conflict lines and across borders." Presented by Australia, Luxemboug and Jordan, the resolution also asked Syrian fighting camps to cease attacks against civilians and stop using shelling and aerial bombardment such as the use of barrel bombs. According to the UN, 9.3 million people, or about half of Syrian population need help. Since the bloody uprising against the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad three years ago, more than 136,000 people have been killed and millions of others have been forced to flee the conflict to neighbor countries.
