France: Iran nuclear talks were useful

French officials were relatively upbeat Thursday after the completion of the latest round of talks between the P5+1 group and Iran on that latter country's controversial nuclear programme and ways to ensure that Tehran does not have nuclear military ambitions. The latest round of discussions, held in Vienna, aimed to build on an interim agreement that has been put in place until June and which paves the way for greater cooperation from Iran in exchange for a partial easing of international sanctions against that country. French Foreign Ministry deputy spokesman Vincent Floreani said that the aim of the Vienna talks was to work "towards a long-term agreement on the Iranian nuclear programme and re-establish the confidence of the international community on its exclusively peaceful nature," a fact several nations have doubted but which Iran maintains is true. "These talks were useful," Floreani said in briefing. "They allowed us to define a working framework and a timetable for the coming months," he added, noting that several meetings were scheduled before July. Floreani further noted that Iran must shed light on "all aspects of its nuclear programme and take concrete measures to respect the commitment made in Geneva" at the first round of talks when the interim agreement was reached in January. Also, the French official stressed, Iran committed in Geneva not to seek to acquire a nuclear weapon and must respect this.
