France’s FM: US-Russia agreement on Syria important step towards Syrian settlement

France’s Foreign Minister has pointed to the necessity to settle the Syrian conflict by political measures. During the negotiations with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Laurent Fabius said the framework agreement on elimination of the Syrian chemical weapon between the US and Russia has become “the first important step.” “A political settlement of the conflict will avoid new victims in Syria,” the French foreign minister said. Earlier on Sunday, the Chinese foreign minister said the US-Russia framework agreement on elimination of Syria’s chemical weapon had opened new options for use of peaceful methods in settlement of the problem with the Syrian chemical weapon. The Chinese foreign minister said his country was for UN’s “resolution on Syria,” which would include details of “the solution of the issue about the chemical weapon.” He stressed the Security Council should be playing an important role and said “military methods cannot settle the Syrian crisis.” Wang Yi said the framework agreement had a positive impact on the “current volatile and tense situation in Syria.”
