Future bloc meets independent Christian personalities

A delegation representing the "Future" bloc met on Wednesday at the residence of the former Minister, Nayla Mouawad, with several independent Christian figures to discuss the initiative of former Prime Minister, Saad Hariri, and means of reaching agreement on a new electoral law. The delegation, comprising deputies Ahmad Fatfat, Atef Majdalani, and Nabil Freij, discussed the abovementioned issues with MPs Boutros Harb, Michel Pharaon, Dory Chamoun, Fouad Saad, and Henri Helou, in the presence of former Minister Nayla Mouawad, the leader of the "Movement of Independence" Michel Mouawad, former MP Kamil Ziadeh and Secretary General of the "Democratic Renewal Movement", Antoine Haddad. "This meeting is part of the tour that members of the "Future" political bloc have been holding to brief different political parties on the overall project submitted by President Saad Hariri," said Fatfat, noting that the project is a sort of "cry to save Lebanon, in order to build a modern state, where all citizens are equal." "The country is facing a major crisis and not a single electoral law has come out," he added. He explained that Hariri's initiative was based on four major points: elections according to a law based on small constituencies, the formation of a Senate, administrative decentralization and respect for Baabda Declaration. In response to a question, Fatfat explained that the duty of the government was to form a supervising committee for elections, nothing more. He also said he was "astonished" by House Speaker Nabih Berri, who had stated that without this commission, the electoral law could come into force. "These words mean that we give the government the legislative authority, which is unacceptable," he concluded.
