Gendarme killed in security operation Turkey's south

A Turkish gendarme was killed and two wounded Monday by suspected Kurdish insurgents in Turkey's southern Adiyaman province on Monday, the force said.

The Jandarma, a paramilitary police force that operates in rural Turkey, said the men came under fire as they took part in a security sweep in Komur village.

A gendarme who spoke to Anadolu Agency identified the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) as the likely attackers. The group is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU.

Specialist Corporal Musellim Unal was killed and Specialist Corporal Tanju Gulen and Master-Sergeant Yunus Vatandas were wounded and transferred to hospital, the gendarme added.

Jandarma teams sent to the area following the attack found camping equipment in nearby woods.

The attack came after a suspected suicide bomb attack in Suruc that left at least 31 people dead.

"All such attacks, including several sabotage acts against Turkey, target nothing but Turkey no matter what the motives of the terrorist groups," Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said following the Komur incident.

A Kurdish group linked to the PKK recently announced the end to a cease-fire with Turkish security forces. The PKK has been fighting the Turkish state since 1984 in a conflict that has seen more than 44,000 killed.
