German Chancellor Angela Merkel has congratulated U.S. President Barack Obama on his re-election, wishing to continue the relationship between Germany and the U.S. as "friends and allies". "On your re-election as the President of the United States of America, I sincerely congratulate you," said Merkel in a congratulation letter to Obama on Wednesday. "I appreciate enormously our numerous meetings and discussions on all issues for the further development of German-American and transatlantic relations, not least about overcoming the global financial and economic crisis, " she wrote. The Chancellor wished to continue Germany-U.S. relationship as "friends and allies" and expected thetwo countries to "face the major foreign policy and economic challenges together". She also invited Oama to be her guest in Germany soon and wished him "much strength and success" in his second term. Obama was re-elected as the U.S. President early Wednesday, beating his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
