
Germany's Defence Minister von der Leyen on Sunday criticized as "incorrect" US President Donald Trump's assertion that Berlin owes "vast sums of money" to NATO and Washington."There is no debt account at NATO," von der Leyen said in a statement carried by German News Agency (DPA).
She said Germany aimed to reach the benchmark 2 per cent of gross domestic product spending on defence by the middle of the next decade, and to only link that to NATO was "incorrect." On Saturday, a day after meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Washington, Trump tweeted: "Germany owes vast sums of money to NATO, & the United States must be paid more for the powerful, and very expensive, defense it provides to Germany!
