German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier welcomed the arrival of Libya’s Presidential Council under Prime Minister Fayz Sarraj in the capital Tripoli on Wednesday.
On the sidelines of his visit to Uzbekistan, Steinmeier said that transferring the Presidential Council to Tripoli is considered an important step in implementing the peace agreement, which was reached by conflicting parties in Libya under a UN-mediated peace deal last year, according to a statement published by the German Foreign Ministry on Thursday.
Sarraj and seven members of the Government of National Accord’s presidential council arrived yesterday from Tunisia at the Bu-Sitta naval base aboard a Libyan naval vessel. They were received by newly appointed Minister of Interior Araf al-Khouja.
In December, Libya’s rival governments agreed to create a Government of National Accord and end the political struggle that began after the 2011 overthrow of then-president Muammar Gaddafi.
