A commander of the Abu Sayyaf organization, Abu Rami, claimed the group were holding captive the German man who they seized from a yacht off the southern province of Tawi-Tawi on Saturday, according to Major Filemon Tan.
Tan said troops found the yacht off the nearby province of Sulu on Sunday and discovered the body of a woman inside the boat. Her nationality has not yet been confirmed, according to the (dpa).
"The body was found to have gunshot wounds and a shotgun was found beside it," he said.
Tan said troops were dispatched to investigate the incident and track down the hostage.
