Greek counter terrorism squad detonates booby trapped envelope at Athens main courthouse

Greek counter terrorism experts detonated on Wednesday a booby trapped envelope found at the main courthouse premises in Athens with no injuries, police said. The squad was notified of a suspicious package by employees at a prosecutor's office once they opened the envelope and spotted cables. The envelope was addressed to the prosecutor. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, but police sources link it to a similar recent incident. On July 3 police defused a booby trapped envelope found at a post office. The envelope was addressed to a retired high-ranking counter terrorism unit official and two suspects were apprehended a few days later in the northern Greece city of Thessaloniki. Earlier on Wednesday a magistrate ordered the detention of the two Greek nationals pending trial for their alleged membership in the "Conspiracy of the Nuclei of Fire" local guerilla group. Greek police are also investigating their possible links with the "Informal Anarchist Federation- International Revolutionary Front (FAI-IRF) group, which claimed responsibility for previous attacks in Greece and Indonesia in June this year. According to Greek police, the incidents include the attack with the booby trapped envelope addressed to the former police official, the bombings of the car of Greece's main prison complex director in Athens and the car of a prison employee in southern Greece, as well as an attack at a hotel in Jakarta. Greece has suffered domestic terrorism for decades. Since its emergence in 2009 "Conspiracy of the Nuclei of Fire" has been linked to a string of attacks against police, political and business targets in Greece and the parcel bombs addressed to European leaders in 2010 which caused minor injuries.
