H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and Chairman of Dubai Municipality, has approved the second phase of the sewage treatment plant in Jebel Ali at a cost of AED1.3 bn.
Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said, "The Jebel Ali Plant is equipped with the advanced tools in the field of sewage treatment, and its final cost will touch AED2.849 bn, with a capacity of about 675, 000 cubic metres per day instead of the current 300, 000 cubic metres produced by the plant."
He noted that the plant would cope with expected future expansion of Dubai city to serve a large segment of the population, and contribute towards servicing 1.35 m people.
Lootah said the plant will not need further expansion until 2025. "The plant is environmentally friendly and does not pollute the surrounding area, efficiently removes phosphate from water, and uses environmentally friendly methods to produce fertilisers," he said.
