Hit-and-run convict moved to federal custody for immigration hearing

A young woman convicted in a fatal hit-and-run in Oregon is in federal custody in Washington, pending possible deportation to Mexico, immigration officials say. Cinthya Garcia-Cisneros, 19, was found guilty of a felony for leaving the scene after accidentally running over two young stepsisters hiding in a pile of leaves in a street Oct. 20 in Forest Grove, Ore. She was moved to Tacoma, Wash., Monday and will remain there until her bond hearing in immigration court, the (Portland) Oregonian reported. The hearing will determine whether she will remain in custody while her immigration case is pending. If she is released, an Oregon judge has ordered her to return and begin her sentence of three years probation and 250 hours of community service. Garcia-Cisneros moved to the United States from Mexico as a young child and had temporary permission to be in the country under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The program does not allow for felonies and other convictions. "She is in grave danger of being deported," immigration attorney Courtney Carter said at the sentencing hearing held last week.
