The Indian embassy said Sunday that it was in touch with US authorities and had sent a diplomat to a Sikh temple in Wisconsin after a shooting left at least seven dead. The embassy in Washington said in a statement that it had was monitoring the "tragic incident" at the Sikh gurudwara in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek and was in touch with the White House's National Security Council. "Our consulate general in Chicago too has been in close touch with the local authorities to monitor the situation. An official has been deputed to visit the site to ascertain the situation on-the-spot," the statement said. Sikhism originates in India. While the gunman was not immediately identified, the US Sikh community -- estimated at around 700,000 strong -- has faced attacks in the past by assailants who mistakenly believe they are Muslim.
