Concerned over the strife in Libya, India on Friday hoped that peace and stability would soon return to that country and offered to extend all possible assistance to its people. 'We have seen reports that Colonel Gaddafi has been killed in Sirte in Libya. The strife in Libya and the suffering of its people has been a matter of concern to us. We hope that peace and stability would return to Libya,' official spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs said. He said India's relations with people of Libya have been deep and long-standing. 'At this juncture, India reiterates its readiness to extend all possible assistance to the people of Libya in their political transition and rebuilding of the country,' the spokesperson said. Reports from Tripoli suggested that Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, a maverick who held sway over Libya with an iron fist rule for 42 years, was on Friday shot and killed by rebels in his hometown of Sirte after the revolutionary forces overran his last bastion.
