India's ruling Congress chief criticises BJP

India's ruling Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi Saturday slammed the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying it doesn't believe in unity. "The idea of India is under threat by those who don't just seek to rule but to change the very heart and soul of the nation. While the Congress stands for unity, the principal opposition wants to divide and separate one from another," Gandhi said at a political rally in the southern state of Kerala's city of Kochi. She added: "The choice is very clear. Whether to vote for peace or vote that promotes fear. We want India's unity and they want to divide by hatred." The Congress president also spelt out the achievements of the Indian government, adding "we approach the people with confidence as we have many achievements to our credit." India goes to polls this May and opinion polls suggest that the Congress is facing its worst ever defeat given its involvement in a series of corruption scandals and its failure to tackle inflation.
