India's ruling Congress party has apparently replaced Nehru-Gandhi scion Rahul Gandhi as the head of its campaign committee for the upcoming general elections with his mother and party chief Sonia Gandhi. In a statement released to the media late Tuesday night, the Congress said that Sonia Gandhi has been appointed the chairperson of the party's 50-member poll campaign committee and Rahul Gandhi the election panel's co-chairman. The latest decision came barely a month after the Congress party had said that Rahul Gandhi would lead the outfit's campaign for the polls slated for May. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and others senior Ministers are also part of the campaign panel. Experts say that the embattled Congress party fears what could be one of its worst defeats in the polls. To save Rahul Gandhi from the anticipated embarrassment, the party replaced him with his mother.
