Indian army officer killed in gunbattle

An Indian Army officer was killed in a gunbattle with infiltrating militants in India's northernmost state of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. The gunbattle ensued when the alert Indian troops tried to foil an infiltration bid by militants from across the international border, reported the Press Trust of India (PTI). According to the report, a large group of heavily-armed militants was trying to sneak into the Indian territory when they were noticed by Indian troops. The Indian security personnel challenged the intruding militants and a gunbattle ensued between the two sides. The report quoted a defence spokesman as saying that a heavy exchange of fire was going on between the two sides
