Indian High Commissioner summoned to Pakistani Foreign Office

The Pakistani Foreign Office on Friday summoned the Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad and registered its protest against unprovoked Indian firing and shelling along the working boundary, GEO TV reported.

The Indian High Commissioner was told that the unprovoked firing and shelling along the working boundary was a violation of the 2003 ceasefire agreement.

Clashes erupted between Indian and Pakistani security forces on Friday, killing at least nine civilians and wounding others on both sides of the contested border, according to officials in both countries.

Since their independence from British colonial rule in 1947, India and Pakistan have fought three wars, two of them over the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.

The two nuclear-armed neighbors had agreed to a bilateral ceasefire in border regions in November 2003, and the agreement held for roughly a decade.

But there has been a series of breaches in recent years.
