Indians have been injured in clashes and their shops have been attacked in the Congo, Indian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday, in what is seen as a backlash after the lynching of a Congo national last week.
“Some shops of Indians in Congo have been attacked and some Indians have been injured by gunshots, possibly in reaction to the murder of the Congolese student in New Delhi,” the ministry said. There are around 5,000 Indians in the country.
The government has moved swiftly to calm African nations who announced their boycott of “Africa Day” celebrations in Delhi expressing anger over the killing of 29-year-old Masonda Ketada Olivier on Friday.
Court allows Italian marine to return home
India’s Supreme Court ruled Thursday that an Italian marine can return home while a UN arbitration tribunal decides which nation should have jurisdiction in a case involving the fatal shootings of two Indian fishermen in 2012 in which he and another marine are implicated.
Salvatore Girone was free on bail before the Supreme Court ruling, but had been asked to remain in New Delhi.
The case has strained relations between India and Italy. The countries disagree on the facts of the case and over which nation should have jurisdiction.
India has accused Girone and Massimiliano Latorre of killing the two fishermen in Indian waters while they were assigned to anti-piracy duties aboard an Italian commercial ship.
Italy says the marines thought the fishermen were pirates and that the shooting occurred in international waters.
