Iran's envoy: No need for opening IAEA office in Tehran

There is no necessity for opening an office of the UN watchdog, IAEA, in the Iranian capital of Tehran, Iran's envoy to the IAEA was quoted as saying by the semi- official Mehr news agency on Saturday. "So far, we have not received any request from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for opening an office in Tehran," Reza Najafi was quoted as saying. In addition, "In our view and due to the (low) volume of nuclear activities in the country, there is no need for the agency to establish an office in Tehran," Najafi said. Chief of the IAEA Yukiya Amano said Friday that it is possible for his agency to open a temporary office in the Iranian capital of Tehran as the IAEA has been tasked with a monitoring role in implementing the nuclear deal between Iran and the world powers clinched in Geneva in November, 2013. Amano also said his agency needs extra-budgetary contributions of some 5.5 million euros (about 7.5 million U.S. dollars) for intensified inspection of Iran's nuclear program.
