Head of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Secretariat Esfandiyar Rahim Mashayee said that Iran as the current NAM president will seriously follow up the implementation of the organization's plans and objectives. He made the remarks addressing a meeting on NAM's cultural capabilities here in Tehran on Thursday. "Iran is determined to pursue and implement NAM's plans as approved by the member-states," Rahim Mashayee said. He noted that NAM is the second most important and biggest international body after the UN, adding that the organization can accomplish great achievements in the world arena. "Iran's three-year presidency over the NAM can be considered as a proper opportunity for activating the movement's potentials," Rahim Mashayee added. He underlined that the movement can play an effective role in creating peace and friendship in the world as well as preventing global conflicts. NAM is an international organization of states considering themselves not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. NAM is the largest grouping of countries outside of the United Nations. NAM member states represent nearly two-thirds of the United Nations' members and comprise 55% of the world population, particularly countries considered to be developing or part of the Third World. Iran received NAM rotating presidency at the opening ceremony of the NAM summit in Tehran on August 26 from Egypt for a period of three years.
