A senior Iranian legislator blasted the US officials for their dual track approach and pursuing a completely conspiratorial policy towards the Iranian nation. "On the one hand, the US Congressmen call for dialog with Iran by writing a letter to Barack Obama, the president of the country, and on the other hand, they are after tightening the sanctions against our country, which indicates the American officials’ confusion in dealing with the Iranian nation” Head of the Iranian Parliament's Judicial and Legal Commission Allahyar Malekshahi said. Washington and its western allies accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program, while they have never presented any corroborative evidence to substantiate their allegations. Iran denies the charges and insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only. Tehran stresses that the country has always pursued a civilian path to provide power to the growing number of Iranian population, whose fossil fuel would eventually run dry. Despite the rules enshrined in the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) entitling every member state, including Iran, to the right of uranium enrichment, Tehran is now under four rounds of UN Security Council sanctions for turning down West's calls to give up its right of uranium enrichment. Tehran has dismissed West's demands as politically tainted and illogical, stressing that sanctions and pressures merely consolidate Iranians' national resolve to continue the path. Meanwhile, a few weeks before the US presidential elections in October, the New York Times reported that Washington and Tehran had reached an agreement to hold one-on-one negotiations. The sources that provided the story, according to the newspaper, were "Obama administration officials". They added that Iran only insisted that the proposed negotiations be held after the US elections. Iran categorically denied media reports about Iranian and US officials' direct talks, and stressed that such claims are aimed at influencing the results of the US presidential elections.
