Egyptian Mufti Dr. Shawqi Allam stressed that Islam is innocent of killing people, adding that it has never called for violence and vandalism committed by extremists in its name.
This came in a statement by the mufti on Tuesday to denounce the terror attack on Kenya's north-eastern town of Mandera that left 12 people dead and many others injured.
He added that such heinous attacks contradict with the moderate teachings of Islam which calls for peace and tolerance.
Meanwhile, the mufti reiterated calls for all nations to join forces in face of extremist ideologies that pose massive threat to all.
Earlier in the day, at least 12 people were killed in an attack in Kenya's Mandera claimed by the Somali extremist group al Shabab.
