Israel has admitted for the first time to the assassination in 1988 of Abou Jihad, the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO)'s number two at the time, Shems FM reported on Thursday, quoting the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharanot. The Israeli newspaper, which will publish the story on Friday, was authorized to release the details of the assassination following six months of negotiations with the country's military censorship, Shems FM said. The operation against Abou Jihad, which took place in Tunis on April 15, 1988, aimed at decapitating the first Palestinian Intifada. It was led by 26 members of an elite Israeli commando under the authority of Moshe Yaalon, the current minister of strategic affairs, and the commandment of his aide, Nahoum Lev, the radio said.
