The American ambassador to Israel, would be wise to “correct himself” and recant comments in which he accused the government of applying a different set of laws to Jews and Palestinians in the West Bank, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked told Army Radio on Tuesday, Jerusalem Post reported.
Ambassador Dan Shapiro infuriated the Israeli government with remarks to a defense conference in Tel Aviv on Monday questioning Israel’s vigilance in preventing Jewish vigilante attacks against Palestinians.
“As Israel’s devoted friend and its most stalwart partner, we believe that Israel must develop stronger and more credible responses to questions about the rule of law in the West Bank,” Shapiro said during an address at the annual Institute for Strategic Studies Conference in Tel Aviv.
“Too much vigilantism goes unchecked, and at times there seems to be two standards of adherence to the rule of law, one for Israelis, and another for Palestinians,” he asserted.
